History of Pazhamudir Solai(Madurai)

Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, located about 25 km north of Madurai atop the Solaimalai hill, is one of the six sacred Arupadaiveedu (holy abodes) of Lord Murugan. The temple’s foundation is believed to have been laid in the 7th century AD by Cheaman Perumal, a ruler from Kerala. Ancient Tamil literature such as Nakkeerar’s Tirumurugaatruppadai and Arunagirinathar’s Thirupugazh vividly praise this shrine. The temple is entwined with rich mythology, including the famous encounter between Lord Murugan and the Tamil poetess Avvaiyar.
